Following the Count:

A Year-long Reflection Series with the Tonalpohualli (1 Tochtli)

The Tonalpohualli teaches us that healing happens in cycles. We will gather every veintena (20 day period) to learn and integrate this sacred count of days during the year 1 Tochtli (Rabbit). A year associated with nourishment, fertility, creativity, excess, and the responsibility of balance.

The series is created and intended for mental health providers and those who hold space for community, this year-long reflection series centers relationship: relationship with time, with self, with spirit, and with the work of care. The energy of Tochtli invites us to explore themes of abundance and depletion, pleasure and restraint, care and overextension—realities many caregivers navigate daily.

Each gathering offers a pause: a space to reflect, dialogue, and reconnect with ancestral wisdom that supports sustainable, grounded, and life-affirming ways of caring. This is not about mastery, but about accompaniment—allowing the teachings and medicine of the Tonalpohualli, as carried through the Arturo Meza count, to guide our personal practice and collective responsibility as helpers and healers.

Ways the Tonalpohualli Can be Integrated with Welless Practices

Cultural, Spiritual, and Ancestral Connection

For those of us with Mesoamerican heritage, engaging with the Tonalpohualli can strengthen cultural identity and offer a deeper connection to ancestral wisdom.

Daily Reflections

Each day-sign embodies unique energies, traits, and lessons. Reflecting on the qualities of the day's sign encourages presence and mindfulness and helps individuals connect with their emotions and goals in life.

Self-Awareness and Personal Growth

Understanding one's birth day-sign (Tonalamatl "identity") can provide insight into strengths, challenges, and patterns, fostering self-acceptance and personal development.

 Cyclical Perspective on Challenges

The Tonalpohualli’s cyclical nature reminds individuals that struggles are part of a larger process, promoting resilience and a sense of renewal.
